5th Annual METROLINA THEATRE AWARDS
will precede gala ceremony featuring musical numbers from nominated shows 7:00 p.m. Sunday, September 14, 2008 at the McGlohon Theatre in Spirit Square
(Charlotte, North Carolina) – The Metrolina Theatre Association, representing more than 50 organizations, along with hundreds of area theatrical artists, directors, and producers in the Charlotte region, will hold the fifth annual Metrolina Theatre Awards, recognizing excellence in theatre.
For a complete list of nominees, please go to: http://metrolinatheatre.org.
The show will be presented on Sunday evening, September 14, in the McGlohon Theatre in Spirit Square. Red carpet arrivals begin at 5:30 pm at the Tryon Street entrance to Spirit Square; the audience and nominees will enjoy a pre-show reception in the Spirit Square lobby prior to the 7:00 pm curtain.
Festive dress is encouraged and black tie is optional for this star-studded gala event celebrating excellence in regional theatre for the previous 2007-2008 season, recognizing ‘Outstanding Actor,’ ‘Outstanding Actress,’ ‘Outstanding Director,’ ‘Outstanding Production,’ etc. in six categories (Drama, Comedy, Musical, Regional, College/University and Special Event). More than 350 people attended the 2007 awards event.
This year’s awards show will feature musical numbers from some of the top-rated shows of the past theatre season, as well as recognition of the ‘Emerging Artist of the Year,’ ‘Theatre Person of the Year,’ and ‘Theatre Company of the Year.’ The ‘William E. Rackley Award for Technical Excellence,’ will be given in recognition of excellence in design, construction, stage management, or overall advancement of technical theatre.
Following the awards ceremony, there will be an after-party at Brixx Pizza with drink specials and complementary food.
Tickets in the orchestra are $25 (advance) and $30 (at the door); tickets in the balcony are $18 (advance) and $21 (at the door). Tickets may be purchased by calling the NC Blumenthal Performing Arts Center Box office at 704-372-1000, at the Blumenthal box offices in the Belk Theater lobby and Spirit Square, at Theatre Charlotte, or on-line at http://carolinatix.org.
The Category Coordinators for the 2007-2008 season are: Alan Hand (College/University), Joe Copley (Comedy), Christy Chambers and Marnie Poirier (Drama), Gillian Albinski (Musical), Wayne Carter (Regional), and Vito Abate (Special Events). Each year, MTA organizes more than 50 peer nominators and reviewers for these 6 categories. Between late August 2007 and early August 2008, the nominators saw more than 100 shows, nominated for and then voted on the best theatrical talent seen on local and regional stages. The voting is certified by an independent accountant, Zoe Hill Warwick.
Organizations and producing entities must be members of MTA for their work to be adjudicated during the nominations process for the Metrolina Theatre Awards. Nominators must also be members, either as individuals or through an affiliation with a member organization. A membership form can be found online at http://metrolinatheatre.org/.
The NC Blumenthal Performing Arts Center is a member of the Metrolina Theatre Association and offers significant support for the MTA Awards event. Additional support comes from the Arts and Science Council, as well as sponsors including Shain Fine Arts Gallery, Brixx Pizza, and Carolina Asphalt.
The MTA Board members for 2007-2008 season were Lydia Arnold (President), Ron Law (Vice President), Stephanie M. Phillips (Secretary), and Lee LaBorde (Treasurer); at-large members Vito Abate, Will Crocket, Pam Galle, Julie Janorschke, Elise Wilkinson, James Yost, and Douglas Young; and ex-officio members Gillian Albinski, John Hartness, and Ron Higdon.
